Tryst with destiny brought Sri Hemchand Devchand Shah to Kurnool in 1943. A devout Jain, hailing from Kutch of Gujarat State, very shrewd in business but frail in health, identified Kurnool climate as the panacea for all his ailments.
The unquenched spirit of serving the fellow brethren that too the residents of Kurnool town and district, the place which gave him succour, drove him to establish a service centre so that the philanthropic activities go on uninterrupted. Hemchand Devchand Charities Trust, founded in 1968 with Sri Hemchand Shah as the Founder Trustee and his sons - Sri Chandrakant H Shah, Sri Kantilal H Shah and Sri Dilipkumar H Shah as the Trustees, unfolded a new chapter in philanthropy and social service.
The Shah family is noted for their contribution to the service sector too. Imbibing the spirit of social responsibility and belongingness, The trust donated liberally for the expansion of school buildings, for furnishing the libraries and also for the medical aid of the poor and the needy of Kurnool town.
HDCT Hospital was established in the year 1971 to provide free treatment and maternity services to the weaker sections of the society .
